A Successful Hiking Guide Skills Course in the Duffy!

Building Skills and Confidence

The Duffy region provided the perfect backdrop for this immersive course. Over four days, we delved into a range of essential guiding skills, focusing on everything from tarping techniques to rescue scenarios. Participants honed their knot-tying abilities, practiced navigation in challenging terrain, and fine-tuned their pacing to ensure the comfort and safety of future clients.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this course was seeing the guides work through realistic rescue scenarios. From stabilizing an injured hiker to planning efficient evacuation routes, each participant demonstrated adaptability and teamwork. These hands-on sessions were not only practical but also emphasized the importance of staying calm and resourceful in high-pressure situations.

A large part of the course revolved around the finer points of hiking guiding. Pacing, for instance, is an often-overlooked skill but one that plays a crucial role in ensuring group cohesion and energy conservation on long treks. The guides learned how to read group dynamics and adjust the pace accordingly, balancing the needs of stronger hikers with those who may need a little extra time on the trail.

Navigation was another focal point of the course. The Duffy region’s diverse terrain offered the ideal environment to practice map reading, compass use, and route planning. Guides learned how to anticipate potential challenges on the trail and plan alternative routes to ensure safety and enjoyment for their groups.

We also spent time mastering knots and tarp setups, vital skills for creating shelter in the unpredictable backcountry. Whether it’s rigging a tarp for a quick lunch break in the rain or setting up an emergency shelter for unexpected overnight conditions, these skills can make all the difference in a guide’s ability to provide a seamless experience for their clients.

Perfect Weather and Great Company

The weather for the course couldn’t have been better. Clear skies and comfortable temperatures made for ideal conditions to explore the Duffy region’s rugged beauty. Each day, we were greeted by breathtaking mountain vistas and lush alpine meadows, a reminder of why we’re so passionate about guiding in these incredible landscapes.

The group of guides who joined us were equally remarkable. Their enthusiasm, curiosity, and camaraderie made the experience truly memorable. Watching them learn from one another, share insights, and grow as leaders was a highlight of the trip. It’s this kind of supportive, collaborative atmosphere that makes courses like this so special.

Looking ahead to Vancouver island
While the Duffy region was an amazing location for this course, we’re equally excited about bringing similar training opportunities to Vancouver Island in the future. The island’s diverse terrain, from coastal trails to alpine peaks, offers the perfect classroom for aspiring and experienced guides alike.

We’re already planning courses that will cover essential skills like navigation, group management, wilderness safety, and more. These sessions will not only provide guides with practical expertise but also foster a deeper connection to the unique landscapes of Vancouver Island.
