VIBE’s Managing Avalanche Terrain (MAT) course is designed for those who want to deepen their understanding of how to safely navigate avalanche-prone areas. This course focuses on terrain evaluation and group management techniques, helping participants make informed decisions to minimize risk in complex avalanche terrain. Guided by experienced ACMG certified instructors, MAT is ideal for those who already have a basic knowledge of avalanches and wish to expand their skills in route planning, terrain choice, and safe travel practices. The course includes both field exercises and classroom sessions, emphasizing practical decision-making in real-world conditions.

The Managing Avalanche Terrain (MAT) course is a practical, field-based course aimed at helping participants develop the skills needed to safely navigate avalanche terrain. This course is designed for those with prior avalanche knowledge, such as AST 1 or equivalent, who want to further their understanding of terrain evaluation and decision-making in complex conditions. The focus is on learning how to identify safe routes, manage group travel effectively, and make informed decisions to reduce exposure to avalanche risk.

Duration: 1 Day
Morning: Classroom briefing on avalanche terrain and decision-making.
Afternoon: Field session focused on applying terrain management strategies and practicing group travel.
Location: Mount Washington area or another suitable backcountry location on Vancouver Island.
Skill Level: Intermediate - AST 1 or equivalent experience is required.
Group Size: Maximum 6 participants per instructor.
Price: $200 per person
Guide-to-Client Ratio: 1:6 for effective, personalized learning and safety.
